This writing is an effort to add to the conversation concerning what a community should be like. I will make an effort to layout some quick points on what those looking to build or enhance their community should be looking at during their process. I will also be defining certain words around the context in which I am trying to use them in an effort to make my points clear.
Having a community mindset is most necessary, b.u.t. before you have a community it is best to put that word into context. Community can be viewed as a group of people living in the same place or having a particular characteristic in common. In this context, a characteristic is a feature or quality belonging to a person, place or thing, serving to idenitfy it. In short, a community is a group of people with a common goal and does not necessarily deal with location. Pretty much, like minded individuals.
Literary giant Robin Walker, in his book on “Black Economic Empowerment”, made a very simple suggestion. He suggested that one does a self assessment on his or herself before starting the path to economic dependency. I would add that every adult in a community should do a self assessment, being honest with themselves to see where they are and how they can first better themselves and then contribute to the community. This self assessment will be simple b.u.t. understandably not easy. We commonly get in the way of our own progress by being other than honest with ourselves.
